Snoring is one of the indicators of OSA, which is a chronic condition characterized by pauses in breathing or shallow breaths during sleep.
Snoring is the sound of the passed air through the narrowed airway.
It is very common disorder and may affect 30% of population. During sleep, muscles tongue, and soft palate will relax and will cause narrowing in the back of the throat. This will interfere with the breathing and would cause the snoring.
We naturally want to breathe through our noses. Some people cannot breathe through their noses because of obstruction of the nasal passages. Deviation of the nasal septum, allergies, and sinus infections, swelling of the turbinate or or large tonsils may cause snoring.
Snoring and Symptoms
The primary symptom of snoring is loud, harsh, or hoarse noises that you make while you are asleep. Other symptoms may include waking up with a sore throat or dry mouth. Snorers can sometimes suffer severe impairment of lifestyle especially if they have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). They may then have daytime sleepiness, fatigue despite adequate sleep, morning headaches, and insomnia. Recent studies confirmed that sleep apnea may cause depression, forgetfulness, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and impotence.
Treatment of Snoring
No certain treatment can completely stop snoring. All treatments for snoring revolve around lessening the breathing discomfort by clearing the blockage in the air passage. Medications can help control some of the underlying causes such as nasal congestion and allergic reactions. Doctors often recommend lifestyle changes as a first line treatment to stop snoring like weight lose, stop smoking, avoid alcohol, sedative medications before bedtime, and sleep on their side.
Other treatment for snoring may include nasal sprays, nasal strips, nose clips, lubricating sprays, or oral appliances. Cpap in which a facemask is attached to a tube and a machine that blows pressurized air into the airway to keep it open.
There are also surgical procedures intended to remove any tighten tissue and widen the airway.
